Of the 1, officers and men aboard Prince of Wales, died. The toll on Repulse was higher, from a complement of 1, Eight hundred and forty souls, blown apart by torpedoes and bombs, scalded to death by escaping steam and ripped to shreds on the exposed undersides of the stricken titans. Or drowned while awaiting rescue, or trapped in the watertight compartments that became their tombs. A resolute believer in the big gun, disdainful of the aircraft as a weapon, he chose to remain to the end on the bridge of Prince of Wales, his flagship.
Winston Churchill, who had sent the ships to their doom, wrote of how he was awoken in the night to be told the news: As I turned over and twisted in bed the full horror sank in upon me. Yesterday the United States marked the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor with memorial services and lowered flags across the country. The British, meanwhile, will largely ignore the 70th anniversary of their own catastrophic overture to the war with Japan.

Welcome to the March edition of Busmopolitan. Professional drivers have a big responsibility for safety and it was disturbing to hear about an Essex bus driver who concealed his type 2 diabetes from his employer. As a result he was involved in an accident which resulted in the death of an 82 year old pedestrian.
The driver had been employed for 5 years by a well known and respected operator, who were completely aware of his medical condition. It also appeared that prescription drugs to control his condition were not used.

Retired railwaymen and steam fans gathered at Guildford railway station on Farnham Road bridge on Sunday July 9 for the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate Guildford’s engine shed that closed exactly 50 years ago. In his speech to around 40 people who gathered at the pedestrian entrance to the car park, Geoff Burch said – ‘It doesn’t seem that long ago when Pat Kinsella and I departed from here aboard our respective locomotives BR Standard Class 5 Nos and to go light-engines to Salisbury, not forgetting the other drivers and firemen who left here that day.
This occasion was originally an idea of another old steam colleague, Bill Moore, who thought it would be a good idea for a few of us to meet up here and go for a drink afterwards. However, Bill Bunce, Pat Kinsella and I put our heads together and came up with an idea which has ended up a full-blown plaque unveiling ceremony! Also I must thank the following people who have generously made donations towards the costs of the plaque; without them, it wouldn’t have been possible: Fortunately, we were still able to raise most of the funds as a result of the kind generosity of persons completely unconnected with the railway industry who genuinely believe that this place is still part of Guildford’s heritage.
Now a little bit about our invited guest Richard Greenwood.

Return to Range Rovers Introduction Like its predecessors, the new Range Rover has its share of mechanical and electrical peculiarities. In spite of the periodic news from Land Rover that their famous quality control problems are solved, they still appear to lag behind other manufacturers in this field. Here we attempt to address some of the commonly encountered problems, based on the personal experiences of owners as well as information gleaned from professional Land Rover mechanics and other sources.
It is hoped that passing on these experiences may make it easier for future enthusiasts to deal with them without going through the RRIII ownership learning curve. Until about June , most North American RRIII’s were under factory warranty, so few details emerged on do-it-yourself solutions and repair operations.
Meanwhile, this page has tried to help with issues that owners have identified but which Land Rover has not yet officially acknowledged as problems needing widespread attention. Also, information you as an owner supply here will help other owners identify the sources of the various teething problems and alert their dealers to the needed repairs.
Later, after warranties have expired on the new models, and owners gain experience with performing their own repairs, more complex repair, overhaul and upgrade operations will be covered in the Repair and Upgrade Operations How-To section of this site. Manuals, Instruments and Tools To my knowledge manuals for the latest model Rovers are no longer available in paper form, unfortunately.
They have to be ordered on CD. On the good side, the new documentation is more comprehensive than the old paper manuals, and the expense is well worth while. For more info, see our Range Rover Scan Tool page. It works on all US and foreign vehicles.

Henricus who worked at the National Squash Centre near the Manchester City stadium and who was chairman of City of Manchester Squash Club also tried to persuade victims they were gay — and raped one in the disabled toilets of a sports arena. I find it difficult to get it out of my mind — I have suffered sleepless nights as a result. I now suffers panic attacks. It emerged Henricus had preyed on ten youngsters aged between 11 and 15 including seven players. He used a total of four aliases including another alter-ego named Tina.
The coach — who was known as Rosh — had started playing squash when he was eight and began playing for the City of Manchester Juniors after he moved to the UK from his native Sri Lanka. He became a coach working with players aged between five and 15 at the Manchester Sports and Leisure Ethiad Campus and was studying a Sports Development degree at the University of Bolton. The incidents occurred between and just four years after he became chairman of the Manchester Squash Club aged just 17 and after he helped at the UK Junior Open squash championship.
Prosecutor Mr Alaric Bassano said: At least one of the boys was seriously corrupted by him and has suffered serious psychological harm. One accomplished young squash player aged 11 who attended three training sessions a week with Henricus was fooled into setting up a Skype and Facebook page at the behest of the coach in the belief he would meet a girl. There were also amorous messages in which they expressed their love for each other. During such conversations the defendant invariably turned the subject to sex and was evidently grooming the boy.
The court heard that Henricus gave no comment in police interview but carried on pestering one of the boys even after he was arrested and bailed.

It is one of two mainline London termini south of the River Thames , the other is Waterloo. The completion of the line into London Bridge was postponed because of delays in constructing a bridge at Bermondsey Street. It was approached through a pair of iron gates. However, the Greenwich railway had underestimated the cost of building the long viaduct leading to London Bridge and was not able to build a sufficiently large station for the traffic for both companies, and so in July it sold some land adjacent to its station then still under construction to the Croydon railway to build their own independent station.
The two railways were therefore required to share the route of the London and Croydon Railway from near Norwood which in turn shared the route of the London and Greenwich Railway from Bermondsey to London Bridge. As a result, in the London and Croydon Railway obtained powers to enlarge the station it was then constructing at London Bridge, before it had opened for traffic.
The new lines, intended for the Croydon, Brighton and South Eastern trains, were situated on the south side of the existing Greenwich line, whereas their station was to the north of the London Bridge site, leading to an awkward and potentially dangerous crossing of one another’s lines. The directors of the companies involved decided to exchange sites; the London and Greenwich Railway would take over the newly completed London and Croydon Railway station, whilst a new joint committee of the Croydon, Brighton and South Eastern companies would demolish the first station and build a new one on its site.
They show ‘a quasi-Italianate building with a picturesque campanile ‘. This line opened on 1 May and most of the services from these two companies were withdrawn from London Bridge, leaving only the Greenwich and Brighton companies using London Bridge station. The SER station was therefore rebuilt and enlarged between and , to a design by Samuel Beazley. A three-storey box-like structure in Italian style was erected, with the name of the railway emblazoned on the top parapet.
It was designed by Henry Currey , architect for St Thomas’s Hospital and had public rooms over seven stories. It was destroyed by bombing in
